Meet a Current Student
Luca Spiler has been studying trombone for the past 12 years, and has been working in the professional music scene in Adelaide for the past four years. Since graduating from Marryatville High School's Special Interest Music Program in 2007, Luca has been studying a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide where he is now in his third and final year. At the Con he has had the privilege to play with some world renowned musicians such as Bob Mintzer, Jim Pugh, and Ray Vega. Luca has also traveled extensively with his music, performing interstate and also overseas, including two invitations to the International Association of Jazz Educators conference (IAJE) in New York. Luca plans to complete his degree in Adelaide and then look for further study options overseas.
'One of the best things about studying at the Con is the sense of community around the campus. It's a great feeling to know that every student there shares your interest and love of music. This really comes into its own in the small groups, put together by the Con. The experience of playing together everyday, making friends and making music really sets up both professional and personal connections that will last for life! My favourite aspect of university is its two Big Bands, which play a wide range of music covering all aspects of Jazz, and do regular gigs around Adelaide. It's a great experience for students not yet exposed to the professional scene to get a taste of life as a musician, and playing in these ensembles really delivers that.'
