Meet a Current Student
Sophie has always played and loved music but knew where her heart lay when she was introduced to vocal jazz at the age of 15. Her vocal achievements to date include Generations In Jazz Vocal Scholarship finalist (2008, 2010), 'Back up Vocalist' for Michael Buble's Adelaide concert and as a guest soloist with the Mike Stewart Youth Big Band. She has also performed with Don Burrows, James Morrison, Michelle Nicolle and was a featured guest in the Daniel Brunner Pretty Big Band. Sophie performed in Adelaide’s sold out “Gospocentric” in 2009 under the direction of Charmaine Jones. In 2009 Sophie won dB Magazines Award for Most Outstanding Undergraduate on Jazz Voice and in 2010 she was a recipient of Adelaide University's Directors Award for Jazz Voice.
'Through the hard work and dedication of the Elder Conservatorium staff I have been provided with numerous opportunities both in academic merit, performance and also in workshops with interstate and overseas Jazz musicians and singers. A highlight was performing with the Bruce Hancock trio and Don Burrows at the Mt Barker Jazz Festival in both 2009 and 2010. My individual voice teacher, Charmaine Jones, has been an inspiration, a committed and enthusiastic teacher and a mentor throughout my time at the Conservatorium. Many of my favourite performing memories have been with both of the University Jazz Choirs, "Adelaide Connection" and "Kind Of Blue". One amazing experience was singing with the Connection Choir under the direction of Luke Thompson in the Gospel Messiah, alongside the ASO, James Morrison and Paulini.'
